The French rapper Dinos released his fifth album today (29th November). The track ‘D block Afrique’ uses samples from our song Death of Fox, first released on the eponymous album ‘Caedmon’ in 1978.
The chorus of D Block Afrique chants ‘Move Bitch Get Out The Way’ in English (referencing the Ludacris track from 2002), while the rest of the track is in French slang.
We know this because Universal Music Publishing contacted us for the first time on 13th November seeking sample clearance and offering a percentage of the rights generated by the new work.
Our first reaction was to deny clearance, but we have decided to consent to this use rather than engage in a legal dispute with Universal. If any proceeds are forthcoming we will use the money for something we believe to be more appropriate and worthwhile.
